Widgets
Design Intent: A note on the home screen is a note you will actually see.
The widgets
- One pinned note (the note you set in-app — on the Lock Screen, the note you pinned there if it is a different one), Billboard (any note you choose when you edit the widget, as big as it fits), Single note, Latest note, Recent note. Note widgets — Latest note and Recent note included — draw checkboxes and bullets the way the editor does, and when a note is longer than the widget the last line says how many more lines there are.
- One to-do note — the next unchecked item in the note you set in-app, with Done and Skip.
- Favourites, Recently viewed, Latest notes, Slotted notes, Browse.
- Quick actions — six buttons on the medium size, nine on the large, and you choose what each one does when you edit the widget: new note, audio note, photo note, list, math or sum note, search, dictate, text from camera, latest note, a 5 or 25 minute timer, or a pomodoro. (The separate New note and Search widgets are gone — Quick actions does both.)
- Timer (ticking live, lock screen too) comes in three styles you pick when editing the widget — Orbit, a ring that drains as the time runs out; Horizon, a sun sinking toward a time line; Pulse, rings going dark from the outside in. A pomodoro changes colour on its break and counts its sessions; a labelled timer shows its label. Edit the widget to choose what it starts — a countdown, a count-up or a pomodoro — and type your own quick times (5, 10, 25, or 25/5, 50/10 for pomodoros): the medium widget shows them as buttons, the small one starts the first. While a timer runs, tapping the widget pauses or resumes it and the small buttons under it stop or restart it — nothing opens the app; a paused timer shows its frozen time with Resume. Start timer, Start pomo — one-tap buttons that become the Timer widget while a timer runs.
- Browse, and the small Favourites, Recently viewed and Latest notes, page with the strip along the bottom edge: tap the left half for the previous page, the right half for the next.
- One to-do note has a "Fit text to the widget" option when you edit it: on, the item grows to fill the widget; off, it stays at your text size.
- Controls for Control Center and the lock screen: New Note, Audio Note, Photo Note, Open Antinote, Dictate, Capture Text, Open Note.
- Widgets wear your theme — the light one by day and the dark one at night, following the phone's appearance just as the app does.
- Widgets are part of the Lifetime license.
- Widgets keep up with your other devices on their own: a note edited on your Mac or iPad reaches the home screen the next time iCloud wakes Antinote in the background, without opening the app. (iOS skips this for an app you have force-quit, and spaces the wake-ups out in Low Power Mode.)
Pin a note to the lock screen
- Orb menu › Widgets › Pin as Live Activity pins the note you are looking at as a Live Activity: its first lines sit on the lock screen, checkboxes and bullets drawn the way the editor does, in your dark theme's colours. On an iPhone with a Dynamic Island the note rides there too while you use other apps — the first line beside a pin, and a hold opens it out to the first few lines.
- A note with unchecked boxes has a second view: the checklist button in the card's corner shows one open item at a time, with Done and Skip — the To-do widget's manners. Done checks the item in the note itself; Skip shows the next one (the same pass the To-do widget keeps); the text button brings the lines back. Once every item is checked the card shows the lines again.
- Edits follow: type in the note and the card updates. Tap the card (or the island) to open the note; Unpin on the card, or the same toggle, takes it down. Up to three notes can be pinned at once, and a note you empty, delete or lock behind Face ID comes down on its own — locked notes can't be pinned.
- iOS ends every Live Activity about eight hours after it went up. A note you still have pinned comes back the next time you open Antinote; one you swiped off the lock screen stays off.
- Needs Live Activities on for Antinote (Settings › Antinote › Live Activities), and is part of the Lifetime license like the widgets.
On iPad
- One pinned note, Single note, Browse, Billboard, Favourites, Recently viewed, Latest notes and Slotted notes also come in the extra large size.
- At that size the list widgets show twelve notes per page in two columns, and Slotted notes shows a card per slot with its planet, title and first line.
Choosing which notes show
- Orb menu › Widgets on any note is one sheet of toggles: Pin as Live Activity, Pin to Lock Screen (the note the One pinned note widget shows on the Lock Screen), Set for One pinned note widget, Set for One to-do note widget, Add to Favourites widget. Or choose them in Settings › Widgets: tap One pinned note, Lock screen note or One to-do note and pick from your notes (locked notes aren't listed). Favourites are listed there too: Add note opens all your notes with an Ephemeral / Slotted switch (tap a note to add or remove it), drag the handles to reorder, swipe to remove.
- Checking a box on the One to-do note widget checks it in the note. Billboard and Single note pick their note when you edit the widget.
