The Quickbar

The bar above the keyboard holds the buttons you choose. Add, reorder and remove them, keep several quickbars, and let the Math and Lists bars switch in automatically.

Updated for iOS 1.65

The Quickbar

Design Intent: The keyboard's top row belongs to you. Put the five things you actually use there and let the rest go.

What is on it

  • Left to right: hide keyboard, undo and redo (greyed out while there is nothing to undo or redo), then a scrolling capsule of your buttons, ending in a + that adds more.
  • Undo reaches back past the current session in a note: each note keeps a history of its recent saved states (the last ten notes you edited, up to forty steps each), so Undo still takes typing back after you swipe to another note and return, or after iCloud refreshes the note under you. The bar's arrows, the Duo column, the undo gestures and select mode's arrows all use it; iOS's own shake and three-finger swipes know only what you typed since the note was opened. The history lives in memory until Antinote quits, and locking a note clears its history.
  • Fresh installs start with Format keyboard, Math keyboard, Dictate, Capture text, Custom prompts, Keywords, Timer keyboard and Clear note. Every button is described in Quickbar buttons.
  • A button whose keyboard is already up closes it when tapped again.

Adding, removing and reordering

  • Tap + (or press and hold the bar anywhere off its buttons) to open the Quickbar sheet. Tap a tile to add it ("… added to your bar"). The live roster at the top can be dragged to reorder, or dragged off to remove. At the bottom of the sheet, Reset to default puts the Default or Lists bar back to the roster it shipped with.
  • On the bar itself, press and hold a button to lift it: the bar expands into a grid, drag to a new spot or drag away to remove. This is undoable.

Several quickbars

  • You can keep more than one bar. The Quickbar sheet has chips for Default, your named bars and New Quickbar (a new one starts empty). A chip's menu offers Rename, Disable auto set, Disable and Delete Quickbar.
  • Every install has two bars from the start: Default, and a built-in Lists bar (Outdent, Indent, Move line up/down, Cycle list type, Move checked down, Delete checked items). The Lists bar can be disabled but not deleted; swipe the Quickbar up or down to move between bars.
  • Swipe the bar up for the next Quickbar and down for the previous ("Quickbar: …"), or add the Swap Quickbar button.

Bars that follow the note

  • The Lists bar can switch in automatically on a list note or while the cursor is on a list item. When the context ends the bar returns to the one you last chose.
  • This is off by default — the bar you set up stays put until you swipe to another. To turn it on, open the Quickbar sheet and untick Disable auto set in the Lists chip's menu; tick it again to turn it back off.
  • Switching bars yourself overrides auto mode until the context next changes.

Double Quickbar

  • The bar only takes the room it needs: with two buttons it is a short capsule, and it grows as you add buttons until it reaches the edge, then scrolls. The smallest bar is the + alone.
  • With Double Quickbar on, the top row beside undo/redo holds as many buttons as fit with the + after them, and only the overflow goes to a second, swipeable bar above the keyboard, with the + at its end. How many fit depends on the screen: on an iPhone upright it is three, so the second bar appears at the fourth button; sideways, or on an iPad, the whole default roster fits one row and there is no second bar at all.

  • The paste offer

    • After you copy something in Antinote, a floating Paste button appears for a minute (copies made in other apps don't bring it up). Press and hold it to dismiss it early.
