Markdown and formatting

Headers, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, highlight, inline code and code blocks render in place. Apply them from the Quickbar or Format keyboard, and clean text on copy and paste.

Updated for iOS 1.65

Markdown and formatting

Design Intent: Plain text that happens to look good. Antinote renders a few Markdown marks in place and never hides them from you.

What renders

  • #, ##, ### at the start of a line for headers.
  • **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, ==highlight== and `code` inline; three backticks on their own lines fence a code block.
  • Highlight washes the text in your theme's highlight colour. It never fires on a comparison (a == b), on ===, inside a fenced code block or across lines.
  • An @mention (@name, with dots or dashes inside, as in @j.doe) takes its own colour, the one variables wear in a math note. It is a colour and nothing more — not a link, not clickable. Email addresses, @@, a URL's /@handle and anything inside code stay plain.
  • // at the start of a line is a comment: dimmed, and ignored by keywords and checklists.
  • Links are highlighted and can be shortened — see Links.

Applying it

  • Select text and tap Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Highlight or Code on the Quickbar, the Format keyboard or the selection menu's Format submenu to wrap it; tap again to unwrap. Header 1–3 set the current line's level; Code block fences the current lines.
  • With a hardware keyboard, ⌘B, ⌘I, ⌘U, ⌘⇧X, ⌘⇧U and ⌘⇧H apply Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Highlight and Header 1 (rebindable), ⌘⇧O opens the Format keyboard, ⌘⇧F opens Find & replace, ⌘= and ⌘− resize text and ⌘⇧M cycles the list type. Tab indents and ⇧Tab outdents; in plain text Tab types a tab. See Keyboard shortcuts.

Pasting and copying

  • Pasted text can be cleaned on the way in: leading spaces, bullets, list numbering, Markdown marks and empty lines are each removable. Text dropped into a note on iPad goes through the same clean-up.
  • Copying can drop the keyword line, copy checked items as unchecked, and strip hidden list markers.
  • A pasted picture attaches to the note. Turn on Extract text from pasted images and a picture pasted on its own is read for its words instead, inserted at the cursor like Text from photos. Text on the same clipboard still pastes as text, with its pictures attached.
