Keyboard shortcuts
Every ⌘ command for a hardware keyboard on iPad — new, search, delete, previous and next note, slots 1–9, split view — the fixed editing keys (Tab, ⌥↑/↓, Esc) and the quick actions from Bold to Find & replace, rebindable in Settings › Keyboard shortcuts and working even with the keyboard hidden.
Updated for iOS 1.65
Keyboard shortcuts (iPad and hardware keyboards)
Design Intent: With a keyboard attached, the iPad app should feel like the Mac app.
When they work
- Every shortcut works whenever a hardware keyboard is attached — with the on-screen keyboard hidden, with a sheet open, or with Search focused. You never have to tap into the note first.
- Hold ⌘ to see the full list on screen. On iPadOS 26 the same commands are in the menu bar too: Settings under the Antinote menu, note commands and Slots under Note, and Search, text size and split view under View.
- Undo, redo, cut, copy and paste (⌘Z, ⌘X, ⌘C, ⌘V) are the system's own shortcuts. Bold, italic and the other formatting keys are Antinote's — see Quick actions below.
App commands
- ⌘ + N New note
- ⌘ + F Search (a sidebar on a wide iPad window, a sheet elsewhere)
- ⌘ + D Delete note
- ⌘ + 1 Go to latest
- ⌘ + [ Previous note
- ⌘ + ] Next note
- ⌘ + , Settings
- ⌘ + = Bigger text
- ⌘ + − Smaller text
- ⌘ ⇧ + M Cycle list type
- ⌘ ⇧ + T Toggle split view (iPad)
- ⌘ ⌥ + T Split direction (iPad)
- ⌘ + T Swap main pane (ephemeral ⇄ slotted)
- Previous and Next step through the stack like a swipe: Previous is the older note, Next the newer one.
- Each key is rebindable in Settings › Keyboard shortcuts, with or without ⇧ and ⌥. These core shortcuts sync between your iPads when preference sync is on (What syncs › iPad keyboard shortcuts).
Slots
- Jump straight to a slotted note, bringing the slots forward if you are in ephemeral notes. The defaults use ⌘⌥ plus the slot number, so ⌘1 stays Go to latest. Rebind them in the Slots section of Settings › Keyboard shortcuts.
- Prefer the Mac's plain ⌘1 to ⌘9? Turn on ⌘1–⌘9 jump to slotted notes at the top of that section. If another shortcut already uses a ⌘ number (Go to latest is on ⌘1 by default), the switch becomes Use ⌘1–⌘9 for slotted notes…, which asks before unassigning it — rebind it to another key afterwards.
- ⌘ ⌥ + 1 Go to slot 1 (Mercury)
- ⌘ ⌥ + 2 … 9 Go to slot 2 … 9
Editing keys
- These are fixed — they are listed under Editing in Settings › Keyboard shortcuts but cannot be rebound.
- Tab indents a list item, or every selected line; in plain text it types a tab. ⇧Tab outdents.
- On an iPad with a trackpad, a two-finger swipe moves between notes too. Settings › Keyboard shortcuts › Trackpad › Swipe between notes sets how readily (Off, Low, Medium or High).
- Esc closes whatever is open, one layer at a time: the notes sidebar, then the Orb menu, then Select mode, then a special keyboard, and finally puts the keyboard away. While a sheet or the find bar is open, Esc is left to the system.
- Tab Indent (list item or selected lines; a tab in plain text)
- ⇧ + Tab Outdent
- ⌥ + ↑ Move line up
- ⌥ + ↓ Move line down
- ⌥ ⇧ + ↑ Duplicate line above
- ⌥ ⇧ + ↓ Duplicate line below
- Esc Close sidebar, orb menu, select mode or special keyboard; then dismiss the keyboard
Quick actions (defaults)
- Quick actions are the same things Quickbar buttons do. Most have a default key with ⌘⇧ (Bold and Italic take the familiar ⌘B and ⌘I), and all of them can be rebound or removed in Settings › Keyboard shortcuts. Unlike the app commands, quick-action keys stay on the iPad you set them on.
- The Quick actions list in Settings shows only Antinote's own actions. Ones already covered by the Hardware keyboard or Editing lists (cycle list type, split view, indent and outdent, move line) and standard text chords (bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, copy, paste, select all, go to line start) are left out there; their default keys, such as ⌘B, ⌘I, ⌘U and ⌘⇧X, still work. On iPhone the split-view shortcuts aren't listed.
- Find & replace opens the system find bar over the note. Replace is unavailable in a read-only note.
- ⌘ ⇧ + K Keywords keyboard
- ⌘ ⇧ + = Math keyboard
- ⌘ ⇧ + O Format keyboard
- ⌘ ⇧ + I Timer keyboard
- ⌘ ⇧ + E Extensions
- ⌘ ⇧ + W Selection wheel
- ⌘ ⇧ + Y Dictate
- ⌘ ⇧ + C Capture text
- ⌘ ⇧ + P Polish text
- ⌘ ⇧ + L Checklist
- ⌘ + B Bold
- ⌘ + I Italic
- ⌘ + U Underline
- ⌘ ⇧ + X Strikethrough
- ⌘ ⇧ + U Highlight
- ⌘ ⇧ + H Header 1
- ⌘ ⇧ + F Find & replace
