Search
Search lists the stack newest first and filters as you type — a sheet on iPhone, a sidebar beside the note on a wide iPad window. Switch between ephemeral and slotted notes, browse the archive with the archived token, swipe a result to archive or delete it, and select several to copy, duplicate, archive or delete at once.
Updated for iOS 1.65
Search
Design Intent: Search is how you find a note you half remember. It is not where you organize them.
Searching
- Open Search from the Orb menu, a gesture, the Search widget or ⌘F. With no query it lists the whole stack, newest first; type to filter. On iPhone, and in a narrow iPad window, Search is a sheet; on a wide iPad window it is a sidebar (below).
- The bottom bar switches between Ephemeral (labelled Ephem on a phone) and Slotted notes (it reads All notes while a query is typed), filters to the archive or to your locked notes, picks the order and toggles List view and Grid view. It stays put above the keyboard while you type. The Archived and Locked buttons share one capsule; each also puts the caret in the search field, so you can type straight into the archive or your locked notes.
- While nothing is typed, the order switch next to List / Grid picks stack order (the notes as you keep them, newest on top, slots by slot number) or recently edited first. Rearranging by drag only works in stack order. A typed query ignores it.
- Locked notes stay out of results until you unlock them from Search: tap the Locked button (or type
locked:) and pass Face ID, and they join the results — plain searches too — for the time set by Keep locked notes searchable for, then drop out again, even from a list you still have open. Archived notes stay out unless you use the archive filter. - When nothing matches, a Create a note with “…” button turns the query into a new note in the ephemeral stack and closes Search — the Mac's offer, on the phone too.
Search tokens
archivedbrowses the archive;archived: receiptssearches inside it. The Archived button in the bar prefills this for you.lockedbrowses your locked notes;locked: passportsearches inside them. Typing the token asks for Face ID (or your passcode) and lists nothing until it passes; if you dismiss the prompt, an Unlock button in the empty list asks again. The Locked button in the bar prefills this for you. The same token works on the Mac.
Acting on results
- In List view, swipe a row left for Delete, Archive / Unarchive and Lock / Unlock. Delete asks first unless Always delete without asking is on (Settings › Tutorials › Confirmations). Slotted notes can't be archived or deleted.
- While browsing the stack with no query, press and hold a row in List view, or a card in Grid view, and drag it to change its position in the stack. In Grid view the card lifts under your finger and the others make room as you pass over them.
Selecting several notes
- Swipe a row right in List view to start selecting with that note picked. In Grid view, press and hold a card until it lifts, then keep still for a moment: the card settles back and select mode starts with it picked (moving it before then rearranges the stack instead). Where the grid can't be rearranged — a typed query, the slots, recently-edited order — a press and hold selects straight away. Tap other rows or cards to add them; the title counts the selection. Done leaves select mode.
- The bottom bar then offers Copy, Duplicate, Archive and Delete for everything picked. Copy puts the notes' text on the clipboard as one entry, in list order with a blank line between notes. Duplicate makes a copy of each note right after its original in the stack. Archive reads Unarchive when every picked note is already archived. Delete asks once for the whole batch.
