Slotted notes

Nine permanent notes named after planets that never auto-delete. Switch to them from the Orb or a gesture, jump between them on the planet bar, and on iPad show them beside your ephemeral notes in split view.

Updated for iOS 1.65

Slotted notes

Design Intent: Nine notes that never go away, for the things you come back to every day. Everything else stays impermanent.

What they are

  • Slotted notes are nine permanent notes, each named for a Greek god: Hermes, Aphrodite, Gaia, Ares, Zeus, Cronus, Ouranos, Poseidon and Hades. Every device creates its nine on first launch and iCloud sync keeps them in step; on iPhone and iPad the first three start out as the tutorial's trip through the slots.
  • They never auto-delete and are never trashed: deleting a slot clears it. Slots cannot be archived.

Switching to Slotted view

  • Open the Orb and tap Slotted in the destination bar, or use the Toggle ephemeral/slotted gesture (two-finger tap by default). Pills confirm "Switched to slotted notes" / "Switched to ephemeral notes".
  • In Slotted view a planet bar sits above the Orb. Tap a planet to jump to that slot, or drag along the bar to scrub through them.
  • Swiping past the first or last slot shows "Icarus, you'll burn." or "Cannot escape Sol".
  • New notes cannot be created inside Slotted view unless "New notes jump to Ephemeral from Slotted view" is on.
  • With a hardware keyboard, ⌘⌥1 to ⌘⌥9 (or plain ⌘1 to ⌘9, if you turn that on) jump straight to a slot from anywhere, bringing the slots forward if needed. See Keyboard shortcuts.
  • ⌘ ⌥ + 1 … 9 Go to slot 1 … 9 (hardware keyboard)

  • Split view on iPad

    • On a screen wide enough for two notes (any iPad, in either orientation) your ephemeral notes and your slotted notes can share the screen, side by side or stacked. Open the Orb: a split button sits right of the Ephemeral/Slotted toggle. Tap it to split; tap it again for one pane. On an iPhone the button pickers leave Split view, Split direction and Swap main pane out, since a phone can't split; an iPhone Duo keeps them once it has been opened in Antinote, and pressing one while the Duo is closed says to open it.
    • While split, the Ephemeral/Slotted toggle decides which pane comes first (left, or top) — the "main" pane. Each pane swipes on its own, and the planet bar lives inside the slotted pane.
    • Tapping in a pane makes it the one the Orb's actions, the Quickbar and the indicators act on. Delete asks you to tap in a note first if neither pane has the keyboard.
    • Move the divider: press and hold the line between the panes until it lights up, then drag it. Either pane can take up to four fifths of the screen; the position is remembered on this device. An iPhone Duo folded like a book keeps the divider on the fold; open flat, it moves like an iPad's.
    • While split, a second chip sits beside the split chip in the Orb: Rotate split turns side by side into top and bottom and back.
    • With attachments shown beside the note, each pane has its own rail for its own note, inside the pane; it can take up to half the pane.
    • New notes always land in the ephemeral pane, so in split view they are created without leaving the slots.
    • Split view, Split direction and Swap main pane are also Quickbar buttons (and so gesture options), and keyboard shortcuts, the same as the Mac's: ⇧⌘T toggles split, ⌥⌘T flips the direction, ⌘T swaps the main pane.
    • Narrow the window (Split View multitasking, Slide Over) and the app goes back to one pane; widen it and the split returns. iPhone never splits.
    • Each pane uses its full width. The centred reading column of a single full-width note only applies when the app is showing one pane.

  • A different look for slots

    • Themes and backgrounds can apply to Ephemeral notes, Slotted notes or both, so slotted notes can look different at a glance — and on a new install they do by default (Sandworm in light mode, Sultan in dark). See Themes and backgrounds.
