Sum, Average and Count

sum adds every number in the note (lines ending in "=" are calculated first and only their answer counts), avg averages them, and count reports lines, words and characters — all live, as you type.

Updated for iOS 1.65

Sum, Average and Count

Design Intent: Three keywords for the question you actually have: how much, how typical, how many.

Sum

  • Type sum on the first line. Every number in the note is added up and the total is shown under the keyword line, updating as you type; the numbers being counted are coloured (the same colour as a variable definition's colon) so you can see at a glance what went into the total — on avg notes too. $2 for apples, $25 for bus tickets and $4.25 for a bagel gives a total of $31.25.
  • End a line with = and it is calculated first, as in a math note (variables, ans and conversions included): 3 coffees * 4.50 = becomes 3 coffees * 4.50 = 13.50. Only the answer after the = is added, coloured like the other counted numbers. A line whose = isn't a calculation (Budget = 500 for food) is left as typed, and the numbers after its = still count.
  • Each line's value shows on the right. A lone number as is, several numbers as their subtotal (eggs 2 milk 4 → 6), a formula worked out even without an = (5 - 3 → 2, 3 coffees * 4.50 → 13.50), and the answer of an = line. The Total is the sum of that column. Turn the column off under Settings › Editor › Keywords; the Total counts the same either way.

  • Average

    • Type avg (or average). Same as sum, but the numbers are averaged.

    Count

    • Type count. The note shows how many lines, words and characters it holds — handy for a guest list or a word limit.
    • Comment lines (//) are left out of all three.
